Interview with Partasah Lillith, vocalist of the Croatian band "Underdust"
RUS | ENG

Sup, users, today we continue to acquaint with different and talented pepresentatives of the Croatian rock and metal-scene. Ok, today we have another one, long-waited and promised by me a couple of months ago interview with Partasah Lillith(Blanka), a vocalist of the melodic-metal band from Zagreb - Underdust.

ABOUT THIS BAND

Year of foundation:
2009
Location:
Zagreb, Croatia
Genre:
Melodic-Metal
Members:
Partasah Lillith (Blanka) - vocals
Mario Romanic - guitar
Viktor Pugelnik - guitar
Vladimir Kasal - bass
Matija Novak - drums

Q. Hi, Blanka. Thank you very much for being able to find some free time and answer the question in this small interview for our web-site. So, let's go? First of all, tell me something about yourself - in a short form. It'd be interesting, if you'll tell me about the begining of your musical experience and musical career.
A. Since I can remember I was into music, singing and listening to various music genres.
My family was very conservative one, and they did not understand this "satanic" metal that I loved, so it was forbidden for me to listen and sing.
To be honest metal is my sanctuary & my painkiller. The biggest satisfaction for me is to have a good gig or rehearsal with the band, when I feel the synergy of all members.
Before the Underdust I used to sing in cover bands, mostly Nightwish or Iron Maiden cover bands. I used to work as a studio vocalist; recorded vocals for radio commercials and jingles. When I look back at that time I think it acctualy was a great training for my voice, singing and future work.
Underdust is my first "real" band and I can say that I am happy and fulfilled to work with really good musicians.

Q. Tell us about Underdust, please. When the group was founded and by whom? How did you start your "metal-machine" in Croatia?
A. Underdust was at first an idea/project that came out from heritage of fair famous Croatian technical avantgard death/thrash metal band called "Forlorn Legacy".
It was founded around 2006-2007 when FL was still alive and working...
Maybe it is good to mention that Forlorn Legacy published 4 demos, one EP and one full-lenght album ("Paths of Insanity", 2004 for Metalsound Records). After european tour with Vital Remains and Ressurecturis ("Vital Brutality Tour 2005") band decided to take a long break. In this period of stagnation, Mario(guitars) focused on Underdust. It did not take long for Viktor to join the project; now both original members of Forlorn Legacy were involved working on new project that actualy became a band rather than a side project. Yes, this was a style shift; with less aggression, fresh members and female vocalist.
With every new song the style has more flavour, but still has the same roots.
I joined the band about a year ago when guys were searching for apropriate female vocalist and it just happened we just "clicked". They had some bumpy time with singers in the past, but that is a thing of the past now. I joined because I found myself in the music and admired their persistence.
Basically we are at the starting position, but we have much to show, and we hope that you will enjoy our work. You will be updated on our every move...

Q. So, you are the second vocalist in this band, right? When and how you joined to the Underdust?
A. Technically, I am the second vocalist who recorded with Underdust. Former vocalist left the band due some personal issues. So, when I joined the band, we re-recorded all tracks and went through the mixing and mastering process again.
It was the right thing to do, you know, to represent the band with the current vibe and  lineup. It could be easier to use tracks with former vocalist, but we choose the hard way.
All that happened during late 2011 until April 2012.

Q. I know that you are preparing to release your debut album. Tell to our readers about it.
A. By the end of this year we plan to record a full length album.
Just for example, for this promo we've recorded 5 songs. Three of them are on our promo disk for 2012. Two of them are waiting for the right timing.
At this moment we have all the songs for the album but, since we are in the process of promotion, we are going to wait a while with the album at least untill the end of this year.
Having in mind that we live in a really "fast" world, it still takes time to do a proper promotion.
I hope that these news'll not disappoint your readers, but, it is a good thing to do for the band - maybe some newer song will sound better on the album.
To say something about the songs themselves - some are "lighter", some are darker, I guess it will please wider spectrum of people in alternative music.
We will keep you up to date...  there should be a new video in month or two for a song that is not on promo material.

Q. Do you already have a publishing label? When the album'll go on sale? In what areas it could be purchased? There are so many questions about that, 'cause I think that our Russian fans of metal music may be want to buy it over the territory of Croatia too...
A. At this moment we do not have a label, but that might change any time. Sometimes it is more important to be at the right place in the right time and to know the people... that is why we have a really good and unbiased manager. To say it shortly: our goal is to reach as much as possible potential fans, promoters, labels and publishers and a nice record deal too.
When we'll release the album, it will be available all over the world. Russian market is a really interesting place to us, because there are so many places where we can play...
Maybe we should have a special discount for Russia :) Since our two nationalities share so much in common, especially in the mindset and in the literature. You are very welcome to do any action mentioned.

Q. Can you tell me please, what is the main theme of the lyrics in your band's songs? In general, what musical and lyrical style do you practice\prefer?
A. Both music and lyrics are reflections of our lives and life experiences. It is personal and honest therefore it talks about all kinds of topics.
We do not "generate" cliche songs and common untrue refrains, so that kind of things can not be found in our music. Sometimes we sound sour, sometimes angry, sometimes melancholic - our style is existentialism. We believe that our music is a projection of ourselves; a kind of cleansing from the insanity that is imposed by the world we live in.

Q. And what affects to the writing of your songs most of all? Experiences, music, people, books... ?

A. Can I answer this one in a flash? Our lyrics are influenced by all most everything that is happening around us and in the world. If you are able to open your mind and think about the humanity these days... you can be influenced by literary anything.

Q. Ok, that's impressive. Let's go to another type of questions. Your favorite musical bands and performers are... ?
A. This is a tough one to answer: it would be unfair to mention only few artists. All members of Underdust have their favorites... sometimes we share common taste, sometimes we like totally opposites types of music and arts. But there is a list of artist we all like and enjoy their work.

Personally, I enjoy various kind of metal, which one to choose it depends on how I feel at given moment. My favorite metal artists are Bruce Dickinson, Ronnie James Dio, Chuck Schuldiner & Ihsahn. I respect them because they are the most complete & lyrics, with a wise music and charisma.
When I feel fine - it is Gojira, when having bad day- it is Akercocke.

Q. Money, wages, finance, material gain - do these things motivate you in work?
A. Generally, we are not materialistic type of people. If we were, I guess we would not be musicians, although it would be nice to have a decent living based on our income from music.
All you mentioned are infact the obstacles in human growth, as we see it, but we are all still trapped in a material world, and there are some imposed rules on us to, which cannot be avoided.

Q. The next resident question I'm asking in every interview with some new talented people from the metal-scene of Croatia: how do you think, what is the most important thing in your life? Maybe you know your own meaning of life?
A. Well, the most important thing in life for us, is to have a purpose and to have a chance to express oneself. We are trying to merge our own purpose and expression in our music.

Q. Thank you very much for an agreeing to ask my questions for www.undercode.ru. I wish you all the best in your future career and I hope that Underdust's debut album will have an awesome and crazy(in a good meaning) popularity in Croatia, such as in some other countries around the world. At the end of our interview - may be you'll also say some words to our readers(and your present and future fans)?
A. Thank you for having us, and thank you again for your time, interest and good wishes. This means a lot to us, especially because in a way you represent people who like alternative music in Russia. Keep up the good work.

To your readers: hope you will enjoy and relate to Underdust's music. You can listen to our song on these links:
